Lyrics:💀💀
UNTI-UNTING BUMIBITAW
HABANG SILA’Y NAGSASAYA
HANGGANG SA HUKAY
IKA’Y IAALAY
UNTI-UNTING SUMISIGAW
HABANG SILA’Y NAGLILIYAB
HANDANG MAWALAY
IKA’Y IAALAY
LISANIN ANG LUPA
NAGLIPANA ANG MGA HUWAD
LISANIN ANG LUPA
NANG SILA’Y MAGSILUHA
LUMALALA HABANG IKA’Y
NAG-IISA PARUSA
PASAKIT KO’Y BUMIBIGAT
PAGKATAO AY HINDI SAPAT
HANGGANG SA HUKAY
IKA’Y IAALAY
UNTI-UNTING SUMISIGAW
HABANG SILA’Y NAGLILIYAB
HANGGANG SA HUKAY
IKA’Y IAALAY
LISANIN ANG LUPA
NAGLIPANA ANG MGA HUWAD
LISANIN ANG LUPA
NANG SILA’Y MAGSILUHA
MATANG MAKASALANAN
HAGUPIT NG NAKALIPAS
LUNURIN ANG SARILI
SA BALON NG PAGSISISI
SILA’Y WALANG MALAY
LISANIN ANG LUPA
NAGLIPANA ANG MGA HUWAD
LISANIN ANG LUPA
NANG SILA’Y MAGSILUHA
MATANG MAKASALANAN
HAGUPIT NG NAKALIPAS
LUNURIN ANG SARILI
SA BALON NG PAGSISISI
LUMALALA HABANG IKA’Y NAG-IISA
LUMALALA ANG GALIT NG LANGIT PARUSA

“Hanggang Sa Hukay” (Until The Grave) is a powerful groove metal track by Primate, an indie band from Cavite, Philippines.

The song combines intense, heavy riffs with a compelling lyrical narrative that captures the listener’s attention from start to finish. I describe this song as “labuyo spiced,” this song indeed delivers a fiery and passionate experience, similar to the heat of siling labuyo – labuyo chili. Papawisan ka kahit nakikinig ka lang sa kantang ito. Aakyat talaga ang heartrate mo.

The lyrics of “Hanggang Sa Hukay” are poetic and evocative, painting a vivid picture of struggle, sacrifice, and defiance. The recurring theme of being offered up “hanggang sa hukay” (until the grave) speaks to a sense of inevitable fate and resilience. The imagery of crying out while others revel and burn, as well as leaving a land filled with falsehoods, adds a layer of socio-political commentary that resonates deeply.

The cemetery setting of the music video, with stacked graves signifies themes of mortality, finality, and the physical manifestation of life’s end. The close proximity of the graves in an apartment-style arrangement emphasizes the overcrowded nature of death and perhaps the inevitability and universality of it. It also speaks of the shared fate of all humans, regardless of their life’s journey.

The song tells us of the individual’s struggle and sacrifice, in a world that continues to move on, and the world doesn’t care about their pain and suffering. With lines like “lumalala habang ika’y nag-iisa” (it worsens while you are alone) and “pasakit ko’y bumibigat” (my suffering is getting heavier), the song portrays a deep sense of isolation and desperation.

“Naglipana ang mga huwad” (the fakes are everywhere) suggests a world filled with deceit and betrayal. The act of leaving the land so the fakes will cry can be seen as a form of defiance against a corrupt and deceitful society. Those who have been deceived by the “huwad” (fakes) and have suffered, leave the land so they can reclaim their dignity, and seek a place where truth and authenticity prevail.

The phrase “lisanin ang lupa” in “Hanggang Sa Hukay” can apply to some of us, depending on our own interpretation. It encompasses themes of escape, defiance, sacrifice, and the search for truth and peace. The cemetery setting, with its powerful imagery of finality and reflection, adds depth to this interpretation, suggesting that leaving the land is both a physical and a metaphorical journey towards liberation and authenticity.

Galit ba sila? Nope. Their faces reamined stoci through the song so i’d say they are telling us that we should be mindful of what’s going on, and that whatever you’re going through, whatever you experience, you are not alone. So stand tall, pull your pants up, and be resilient and find ways to get through this.
